SC #3 Procharger D1SC
on: Nov 18, 2012, 02:02 pm
I put a D1 HO in my car a few weeks ago.  I've always wanted one and finally pulled the trigger when Procharger offered a $350 rebate.

It's a bit more difficult to tune than anything I've had before.  The maf is located in the intercooler.  This makes getting the maf xfer and lwfm tables a little trickier for me.  I had to get a little help from a tuner I know in Venezuala to get it figured out.

The final tune is going on in a few minutes.  From here it's on to a dyno to back up the datalogs I've done.  I took a few pics along the way.

This is my modification to the Procharger piggyback sc pulley.  One of the things I like about Procharger is the dedicated 8 rib supercharger belt.  The standard method is to take the balancer bolt out, put the piggyback pulley on, and install a longer bolt.  Three hardened pins align with slots in a factory balancer to prevent rotation.  I wanted a little more clamping force so I drilled new holes along side the pins.  The holes common to the balancer were tapped, then the assembly was bolted up.  The pins were kept in place for shear loading so all the bolts are doing is keeping the parts together.

I was impressed with the quality of parts.  Even the blow off valve was well made.

The finished product.

There have been a few changes.  The procharger bov was changed out for a 50mm ebay special.  Fuel has been switched over to E85.  Pulley has been changed to a Reichard Racing 3.75".  I'm running out of fuel up top but everything is good right now.  Driveability, fuel pump duty cycle, cold motor starting and driveability is all good.  I can't say enough about having Pro Racer to fine tune the driveability aspects of the motor and car.

Here's the bov.

Dyno results.  SAE, STD, and Uncorrected.  Marysville Speed gave me the winpep log from my runs so I can change how they display and use the info to review.  Notice the hook right before it goes lean.  This is fairly common with a maxed fuel system.  Once the injectors go wide open they are flowing about 107%.  Bosch Racing 95lb injectors are on the way.  This run was done with 47lb frpp injectors modified to flow 80lbs at 3 bar with n-heptane.  I was running them at 39.15psi so they were in effect 76 lb injectors.

The D1SC really responds off throttle.  It's 4.1 drive ratio kicks the boost up pretty quick.  I'd say it behaves right inbetween the Paxton and Whipple superchargers I've had previously.  Superb driveability with a serious punch that starts around 3500 rpm and doesn't let up.

Was it worth it for the e85 conversion?

All I've needed for e85 is bigger injectors and a bap.  Just about any American made car from this century is already compatible.

When I had the whipple just going to e85 gained 43 rwhp.  That was with the same spark advance.  Once it was fine tuned the gain was 66rwhp with the same boost level.  The Paxton gained 51.  Extra power plus no chance of detonation, I love the stuff.

The new injectors got here yesterday.  Bosch Racing 95lb.  They have a nice 7 hole orifice for multi valve atomization.  Flow matched from the factory.  They needed height and connector adapters.

I used ID1000 values and everything is spot on.  Start, idle, tip in are all great.  I still need to get it on the dyno for wot maf adjustments.  It's just about impossible to get any wot data with this motor on the road.  The tires just blow off in the lower gears and a redline wot pull in 3rd would be serious trouble.

Whats the fuel economy like with e85? I've heard that there is much less energy in e85 compared to standard gasoline so it consumes more fuel for the same results.

It behaves differently than gasoline.  Less btu energy yes, but more power.  Once a motor gets to 14:1 compression mpg will be the same as a gas motor but with alot more hp.

I've noticed a 20% drop in fuel economy with e85 on a supercharged application.  Right now I only get 13.5 city and about 18 highway.  This small pulley is affecting mpg.  With a large pulley and gasoline I was at 16 city and 21-22 or so highway.  It's hard to get true highway mpg figures around here.
